Sustainable Port Authority.

Sustainability shall characterise all operations within the port and is an important starting point for all work performed. When talking about sustainability, we include the three dimensions within this term: social, environmental and financial. For us, sustainability is about achieving a balance between these three dimensions. In consultation with our owner, we are striving to achieve a sustainable city, and in collaboration with our stakeholders, we are striving to achieve a sustainable industry. The port authority has a direct impact on many areas of sustainability and also contributes through our role for the entire cargo hub.

Financial.

In the financial area, the commercial conditions are balanced with the need for long-term ownership. It is crucial that operations generate a strong cash flow in order to enable the port authority’s investment programme and create the conditions for sustainable growth.

Environment.

As for the environment, control is exercised to minimise the environmental impact from internal operations and the rest of the cargo hub. By proactively developing methods in collaboration with terminals, shipping companies, lessees and land transport operators, we contribute to more sustainable transport operations.

Social.

In the area of social sustainability, we act both locally within the City of Gothenburg and based on our role in the port cluster. The port authority shall continue to be an attractive workplace that is characterised by a good, safe and developmental work environment. Development and operations are being driven through competent, creative employees.

The Port of Gothenburg’s impact on the UN’s global sustainable development goals.

We assume responsibility by being a driving force for sustainability, within the port authority and the cargo hub. The port forms a central element of the transport industry’s role to ensure that society can achieve the UN’s global sustainable development goals.

In Scandinavia’s biggest cargo hub, the port authority has a vital role in contributing to the implementation of Agenda 2030, both in Sweden and internationally. Under Agenda 2030, the world’s countries have adopted 17 global goals for sustainable development that aim to achieve four objectives by 2030: abolish extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and injustices in the world, promote peace and justice, and solve the climate crisis. The Gothenburg Port Authority is affected by 15 of the 17 goals and by 63 of the 169 targets, with a degree of relevance that varies according to the authority’s mandate and the impact of its operations.

The analysis in accordance with Agenda 2030 is integrated into the Gothenburg Port Agency’s business plan and goals. It has also been used in the selection of the authority’s most significant sustainability-related issues.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Youth and sailing

In order to get more young people interested in boating, shipping and the operations of the port, the Gothenburg Port Authority continues to sponsor Gårdstensbostäder's integration project "Youth and sailing".

ENVIRONMENT

Wetland at Torsviken

The Port of Gothenburg have been working on the construction of a wetland for wildfowl at Torsviken. The wetland is a way of reinstating an area that has been used for almost 40 years as a deposition site for dredging spoils.
