Environmental impact arises in various ways across the Port of Gothenburg’s value chain, with climate impact being the most significant. Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges, and the company plays a central role in the transition towards a more sustainable and climate-efficient transport system. The Port of Gothenburg focuses on combining reduced emissions, environmental consideration, and energy efficiency with strengthened competitiveness and robust logistics.

Resource use and circular flows

The Port of Gothenburg works to ensure responsible use of natural resources across its operations—from the procurement of materials and management of land and water to waste handling. The aim is to use resources more efficiently and reduce unnecessary waste.

Waste generated within the port’s own operations, as well as waste received from vessels, is managed in accordance with the waste hierarchy. This means prioritising preventive measures, followed by reuse and recycling wherever possible. Proper sorting is a key part of this work.

Dredging is necessary to maintain sufficient depth in fairways and for the development of port infrastructure. To conserve resources, needs are carefully assessed and opportunities to reuse dredged materials are taken into account. One example is the expansion in Arendal, where dredged materials were reused instead of using new materials, contributing to more circular flows.

The Port of Gothenburg also receives various types of waste from vessels, such as solid waste, engine room waste, and tank wash water. Clear guidelines and procedures ensure that waste is sorted and handled in a safe and responsible manner.
