The port’s role in the value chain
The Port of Gothenburg is a key hub in the transport chain where sea, rail, and road meet. Through long-term investments and planning, the port creates stable conditions for goods to be transported efficiently and safely, both today and over time.
The port’s operations require resources such as steel, cement, and energy, and a large share of transports still depend on fossil fuels. This entails both an impact and a responsibility, but also clear opportunities to drive development in a new direction.
By enabling smarter flows and more intermodal solutions, the Port of Gothenburg can influence how goods are transported between different modes of transport. More efficient transport reduces emissions per delivered unit, saves resources, and contributes to improved road safety, while also limiting the impact on the port’s surrounding areas.
Demands from customers, legislation, and society at large are rapidly changing the conditions for transport. Through long-term investments and clear governance, the Port of Gothenburg contributes to the development of a more robust and competitive transport system that meets future needs.
Our approach to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
As the largest freight hub in the Nordics, the Port of Gothenburg plays an important role in contributing to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, both locally and globally. The 2030 Agenda outlines 17 global goals for sustainable development, adopted by countries worldwide, with the aim of achieving four key objectives by 2030: eradicating extreme poverty, reducing inequalities and injustices, promoting peace and justice, and addressing the climate crisis. The Port of Gothenburg is connected to 15 of the 17 goals and 63 of the 169 targets, with varying degrees of relevance depending on the company’s mission and the impact of its operations.
