Protection of natural environments and biodiversity

The Port of Gothenburg has a responsibility to minimise negative impacts on biodiversity, both on land and in water. For major projects involving new land or water areas, or the redevelopment of quays, environmental assessments are carried out. These include surveys of plant and animal life, as well as evaluations of how impacts can be avoided, minimised, or, where necessary, compensated.

The marine environment in and around the port area is monitored regularly. This includes annual surveys of eelgrass meadows and mussel beds, as well as studies of benthic fauna at the dredged material disposal site, Nya Vinga. This knowledge forms an important basis for decision-making and future planning.

In connection with the development of new terminal areas, compensatory measures have also been implemented, such as the replanting of eelgrass in several locations in the Gothenburg archipelago. Eelgrass meadows are important habitats for many species and contribute to both biodiversity and a more resilient coastal ecosystem.

Wetland at Torsviken

The Port of Gothenburg have been working on the construction of a wetland for wildfowl at Torsviken. The wetland is a way of reinstating an area that has been used for almost 40 years as a deposition site for dredging spoils.
