The Port of Gothenburg continues to promote the transition within the transport sector
The Port of Gothenburg works with sustainability from a broad perspective, from climate impact to how operations interact with the surrounding environment. The focus is on understanding complex challenges, making data-driven decisions, and strengthening the organisation’s ability to manage change.
In a changing world marked by geopolitical uncertainty, long-term thinking and collaboration are essential. The port plays a key role in ensuring stable trade flows and works closely with authorities and industry partners to maintain robust infrastructure and accessibility.
The energy transition must continue if we are to be able
to create better conditions for future generations
Göran Eriksson, CEO, Port of Gothenburg
The transition of the transport sector is a priority, with a strong focus on shipping. Investments in shore power and enabling fossil-free marine fuels, combined with international collaboration, help drive progress. At the same time, efforts to reduce emissions from port operations are intensifying.
The Port of Gothenburg aims to combine economic growth with reduced environmental impact. Through active dialogue with decision-makers and a clear focus on the role of rail in the logistics chain, the port contributes to long-term sustainable transport solutions.
The Port of Gothenburg’s impact on the UN’s global sustainable development goals
In Scandinavia’s biggest freight hub, the Port of Gothenburg has a vital role in contributing to the implementation of Agenda 2030, both locally and globally. Under Agenda 2030, the world’s countries have adopted 17 global goals for sustainable development that aim to achieve four objectives by 2030: abolish extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and injustices in the world, promote peace and justice, and solve the climate crisis. The Port of Gothenburg is affected by 15 of the 17 goals and by 63 of the 169 targets, with a degree of relevance that varies according to the company’s mandate and the impact of its operations.
We create value for our customers, business and society by developing the freight hub and creating the conditions for sustainable growth. We do this by guaranteeing access to the whole world for the business community.
We have an impact on nature, because port operations have an impact on climate, water, land and resources. We take action to reduce our own and our customers’ environmental impact. This includes, for example, creating incentives for a transition in shipping through environmental discounts, work to increase the proportion of freight transported by rail or implementing compensation-based measures. We make use of our role to affect as many actors as possible.
