The Paper Roll – transit warehouse enhancing forest industry exports

Smoother and faster export of forest products
The demand for Swedish forest products, such as cartonboard, paper, and pulp, continues to rise in the European manufacturing industry. Swedish forest products are particularly sought after for premium packaging and industrial applications, but constraints in land-based infrastructure have created challenges for efficient distribution.
To address this need, Gothenburg RoRo Terminal has invested in a 6,000-square-meter weather-protected transit warehouse called “The Paper Roll.” This facility serves as an efficient interim storage solution, protecting high-quality forest products before they are shipped to their final destinations.
– We see increased demand from several of our forest industry customers, and to meet that demand, we have now expanded our capacity, says David Wallgren, Senior Business Development Manager at Gothenburg RoRo Terminal.
Shorter lead times and increased capacity
With the new transit warehouse, transport time from Sweden to Central and Southern Europe has been reduced from 23 to just 14 days. Billerud, one of Sweden’s leading forest industry companies, has increased its export volume via the terminal from 80,000 tons to 280,000 tons per year thanks to this efficient solution.
– Transporting large volumes using a combination of rail and sea is a sustainable and reliable solution. The vessels calling at the Port of Gothenburg are fuel-efficient and connected to shore power while docked, further reducing environmental impact, says Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales at the Port of Gothenburg.
Sea transport – a reliable and sustainable solution
The growing preference among forest industry players for sea transport via the Port of Gothenburg is no coincidence. Unlike land-based transportation, where bottlenecks and limited capacity can cause delays, sea freight offers a more reliable and cost-effective alternative.
Gothenburg RoRo Terminal plays a central role in this solution with an integrated intermodal terminal and a rail network that extends directly into the terminal’s weather-protected loading centers. The terminal’s Rail-Ship service enables rapid transfers, ensuring efficient transport flows to some of Europe’s most critical logistics hubs.
Strategic departures and efficient lead times
With seven berths and frequent departures to key European ports, Gothenburg RoRo Terminal offers one of the most efficient logistics solutions for the forest industry:
-
Immingham, UK – 5 departures per week
-
Ghent, Belgium – 6 departures per week
-
Zeebrugge, Belgium – 4 departures per week
This frequency provides the forest industry with a flexible and rapid transport chain, ensuring deliveries to Europe’s largest markets.
The Port of Gothenburg – a key player in global forest industry exports
With the launch of “The Paper Roll” and increased capacity at Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, the Port of Gothenburg further strengthens its position as the leading logistics hub for the Nordic forest industry. With efficient transport solutions and sustainable alternatives, the port plays a crucial role in ensuring Swedish forest products reach global markets quickly and securely.
