Falköping’s Logistics Center is for all of Skaraborg

As Head of Development and Quality at Falköping Municipality, Ida Elf is more than pleased with the growth of the Skaraborg Logistics Center. The new intermodal terminal now offers 87,000 square meters of covered space—and its potential for continued expansion is substantial.
With the ability to receive trains up to 750 meters long and connections from the north, capacity will grow even further.
- With the new terminal, operators can focus more on exports, creating a more balanced flow of imports and exports at the Skaraborg Logistics Center, says Ida Elf.
The terminal serves a catchment area with a radius of about 200 km and offers access to both the Western Main Line and the Jönköping Line. This enables modern, cost-efficient, and sustainable transport solutions that enhance the region’s business competitiveness.
Falköping plays an active role in Railport Scandinavia, a network that connects Sweden’s largest intermodal terminals with the Port of Gothenburg. According to Ida Elf, this kind of collaboration is essential for developing rail logistics across the country.
At the regional level, networks are also vital. She sees Falköping as part of the network city Skaraborg, a sub-region of Västra Götaland where no single city dominates—creating an environment of mutual support among the 15 municipalities.
Skaraborg Logistics Center may be located in Falköping, but it’s a logistics hub for all of Skaraborg.
A national-level initiative gaining traction is the use of long trucks—each capable of carrying two 40-foot containers instead of one. This halves the number of vehicles on the road and, with the growing use of electric trucks, drastically reduces CO₂ emissions for last-mile delivery.
Falköping Municipality supports the idea of turning the current permit for long trucks between Falköping and Skara into a permanent expansion of the regional road network around the logistics center.
At the same time, direct trains to and from the Port of Gothenburg remain crucial for the green transition. With forecasts indicating a sharp rise in rail shuttle traffic, there is a growing need for expanded rail capacity—especially between Gothenburg and Alingsås. That’s where Falköping’s collaborative mindset proves invaluable.
- The fact that we’re just 130–140 km from Gothenburg is a major advantage, because it allows for two full, sustainable train loops in a single day, Ida Elf emphasizes.
