“Collaboration with the Port of Gothenburg is crucial”

What makes Nässjö such a strong contender in the race for sustainable logistics? We spoke to Peter Johansson from Nässjö Näringsliv AB about how the city is positioning itself as a green, growing hub, and why collaboration with the Port of Gothenburg is essential.

In Summary

  • Nässjö has a strategic logistics location with direct rail connections to the Port of Gothenburg, giving local businesses global reach.

  • Nässjö Näringsliv is actively working to strengthen collaboration with Railport Scandinavia and develop sustainable transport solutions.

  • The combination of rail, charging infrastructure, and a planned biogas station creates the foundation for climate-smart logistics.

  • The terminal in Nässjö is a key asset for both established companies and for attracting new investments and jobs to the region.

  • Efficient transport is essential for business profitability and long-term competitiveness in the region.

Each year, Nässjö Näringsliv holds over 2,000 check-ins with local businesses and carries out around 1,500 concrete actions — from helping startups to promoting Nässjö as an attractive location for larger companies. This includes events, education, networking, and talent development. “At Nässjö Näringsliv, we have one daily goal: to create a dynamic municipality with a fantastic business climate,” says Peter Johansson, Business Developer at Nässjö Näringsliv AB. For business leaders, accessibility, lead times, pricing, and sustainability are key. In all of these areas, Nässjö delivers — located just 25 minutes from the E4 motorway.

“We work for better, more sustainable infrastructure for both freight and passenger traffic. As part of that, we’re driving the Handelsplatsutveckling initiative, strengthening Nässjö as a retail destination. Through our Nordic Infracenter brand, we also offer networking, learning, and development for the railway industry,” says Peter Johansson. Rail transport is a major advantage, giving Nässjö’s business community access to global markets. The fact that Nässjö’s intermodal terminal is part of the Railport Scandinavia system is, according to Peter, a huge asset. It makes the city a natural choice for companies — something reflected in the long list of local businesses: JYSK, Industrilås, Prysmian, Intersport, CEOS, Cellwood, Flook, Nevotex, Tura, Eldon, Teknikhallen and ESSNCE.

“Collaboration with the Port of Gothenburg is absolutely essential to ensure that companies can reach customers and suppliers around the world in an efficient and sustainable way. Reliable transport solutions are critical for long-term profitability,” he says. The terminal is a key regional hub, not only for existing businesses, but also in attracting new investment and creating jobs. Peter Johansson hopes to strengthen ties with the Port of Gothenburg and Railport Scandinavia to develop more sustainable and profitable solutions. Top of the wishlist: more trains between Gothenburg and Nässjö, as well as extended services northward and further into Europe.

“Sustainability is a vital long-term issue for business survival. Rail is unbeatable, but we’re also investing in charging stations for heavy vehicles and planning a biogas station to enable greener last-mile deliveries”
