The Port of Gothenburg strengthens its position in Nordic trade
- We are pleased with the recognition, which we see as proof of the port’s importance and the region’s joint efforts to build a strong and innovative cargo hub. The port is central to the region’s logistics position, and over the past year its standing has been strengthened both in Sweden and internationally. Not least through an expanded ocean network and continued rail development connecting the port to inland destinations. This resulted in record volumes in 2025, increased market share and a reinforced role as a hub for Nordic trade with global markets, says Jacob Minnhagen, Senior Market Development Manager at the Port of Gothenburg.
The Port of Gothenburg is the largest container port and the largest car/RoRo port in the Nordics, supported by a well-developed rail system linking the port to inland terminals and major industrial regions across Sweden and Norway. The combination of sea, rail, road and air connections creates efficient and scalable transport solutions for both imports and exports.
Infrastructure, cargo flows and market access key to success
In its assessment, Dagens Logistik evaluated logistics regions based on factors such as:
-
Versatility and capacity of infrastructure (ports, railways, roads, airports and intermodal terminals)
-
Cargo flows within and through the region
-
Conditions for international import and export
-
Proximity to population centres and consumer markets
-
Existing logistics establishments and competence supply
The strength of the Gothenburg region lies in the overall ecosystem with the Port of Gothenburg serving as the central hub in an integrated transport system with direct access to global markets.
Growing Interest in Logistics Establishments
The strategic location and strong infrastructure are also reflected in increasing demand for new logistics investments.
- We have long maintained close collaboration with Swedavia Landvetter Airport, Business Region Gothenburg and other regional stakeholders. Together, we are working to become even more attractive for logistics establishments, and we continue to see growing interest both in areas surrounding the port and across the wider region, says Jacob Minnhagen.
The ranking has existed for 26 years, with the Gothenburg region claiming the top position 25 times. Since 2024, the list has expanded from covering Sweden to including the entire Nordic region. This year, the Öresund region and the Greater Stockholm region rank second and third, followed by Oslo, the Baltics, Helsinki, Jönköping, the Bothnian Bay region and Central Jutland.
