The Port of Gothenburg has been nominated for the Green4Sea Excellence Award 2017 for its environmental work. The winner will be announced following a vote by the general public.

One of the Port of Gothenburg greatest challenges is to reconcile increased growth with achieving the lowest possible level of environmental impact.

The Port of Gothenburg is one of five companies and organisations shortlisted for the international environmental award GREEN4SEA Excellence Award 2017. The port has been nominated for its work on mitigating the environmental impact of shipping and contributing to the creation of sustainable transport.

Edvard Molitor, Senior Manager Environment at Gothenburg Port Authority, said: “One of our greatest challenges is to reconcile increased growth with achieving the lowest possible level of environmental impact. We find it satisfying when our environmental work is highlighted in an international context. We hope that this will encourage and inspire others to embark on similar initiatives.”

In the nomination, a number of the port’s environmental initiatives were highlighted. This includes rules for bunkering of liquefied natural gas (LNG), initiatives for safeguarding wildlife and nature in the surrounding area, environmental discounts on the port charge, and onshore power supply for vessels.

The winner will be announced following a vote by the general public and they will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Athens on April 4.

The other nominees in the ‘Excellence’ category are ESPO, IHMA, Intertanko and Martecma.

The organisation behind the award is GREEN4SEA, a non-profit project that works to promote environmental excellence and sustainable shipping. Through GREEN4SEA Awards they are seeking to highlight companies in the shipping industry that have contributed to assuring environmentally sustainable development. The GREEN4SEA Awards were first held in 2016. Last year’s winner in the ‘Excellence’ category was the marine service provider Capital Ship Management Corporation.
