Intermodal terminal at the Arken marshalling yard

A intermodal terminal is scheduled to be built in the outer harbour area. The terminal will become operational in December 2017.

The new terminal will be located beside the port’s ro-ro terminals. From the terminals, trailers can be transported to a variety of destinations, including the United Kingdom and Belgium.

The intermodal terminal will have six tracks. Two tracks will be used for marshalling and four will be allocated for loading and unloading trains using two rail cranes. Fully operational, the terminal will have the capacity to simultaneously handle two trains 560-730 m in length and four trains 420 m in length.

Both trailers and containers will be handled at the combi terminal although the focus will be on trailers.

Around 70 per cent of the freight that will be handled at the terminal will be related to the port, Volvo or other companies located nearby.

Around 70 per cent of the freight that will be handled at the terminal will be related to the port, Volvo or other companies located nearby.

On a normal day, the terminal will receive 12 trains and 200 trucks. Apart from the trains that operate on domestic routes to Norrland, Stockholm and other locations, there are also trains bound for various destinations in Europe. In one year, some 70,000 trailers will switch from one mode of transport to another at the terminal.

Construction of the intermodal terminal will take place in two phases. The first phase will be completed in December this year, which is when traffic is due to commence. The terminal will be completed by 2019-2020, by which time reloading will take place using cranes instead of trucks, and the entire terminal be electrified and controlled by signals. Initially, around 10 people will be employed.

The terminal will be operated by Sandahlsbolagen.
