For a number of years, the Port of Gothenburg has invested in rail shuttles that link the port to inland terminals in towns and cities throughout Sweden and Norway. The system is known as Railport Scandinavia and includes 25 daily rail shuttles carrying containers and several conventional trains loaded with export goods such as forest products and steel.
In just one year, the rail shuttles used in the system reduce carbon emissions by over 60,000 tonnes, equivalent to the emissions from 17,000 petrol-driven cars for a whole year.
